Magdalene impress on first night of May Bumps as James Cracknell races for Peterhouse
Magdalene were the big winners of a busy opening night in Cambridge University’s May Bumps.
An overbump in the men’s top division saw them jump from a starting place of fifth up to second.
The biggest losers were Clare, who swapped places with Magdalene to now lie in fifth. As part of the overbump, Caius went above Pembroke into third place.
Further down the men’s top division, a strong Peterhouse crew that included double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell, Olympian Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk and world championship oarsman Sam Hookway - who were all victorious with Cambridge in this year’s Boat Race - bumped Jesus to move up to ninth.
Other movers in the top division were King’s, who caught Queen’s to go up to 11th, and Lady Margaret II, who overtook Wolfson into 17th.
The top three in the women’s top division all held their position, with Jesus first, Newnham second and Emmanuel third, but there was much movement throughout the rest of the division, with only Homerton and Queen’s rowing over.
There were bumps for Caius (to fourth), Lady Margaret (sixth), Churchill (eighth), Pembroke (10th), Fitzwilliam (12th) and St Catharine’s (15th).
Further down the women’s divisions, Caius II earned a double bump to go up to 17th in Division Two.
Back in the men’s Division Five, Clare IV went from sixth to third with an overbump at the expense of Jesus IV. Magdalene went above Queens’ into fourth.
