Centre-back completes U's comeback for three points

Mark Roberts scored a late winner as Cambridge United recovered from being two goals down to beat Newport County 3-2 in Sky Bet League Two.

The game seemed set to be heading to the break goalless only for former United striker Ryan Bird to nip in at the front post to give Newport the lead.

And they doubled their lead in the 57th minute as Bird finished off David Pipe’s cross.

But United responded six minutes later, with Barry Corr heading in Piero Mingoia’s cross.

And they were back on level terms after 72 minutes as Leon Legge powered home Liam O’Neil’s delivery.

In the 90th minute, Luke Berry was fouled in the box by Mitch Rose, earning the Newport man a red card and United a penalty.

George Maris stepped up to take the spot-kick, with Corr off the pitch with a blood injury, but the effort was saved by Newport keeper Joe Day.

However, Roberts was on hand to smash home the rebound to complete United’s comeback and earn the three points.
