‘Massive’ moment as Ben Worman scores first professional goal for Cambridge United against rivals Peterborough United
Ben Worman has described getting his professional goal for Cambridge United against rivals Peterborough United as “massive”.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder had been expected to miss the match because of a loan spell at St Neots Town.
But, given the current lockdown, the EFL relaxed the rules for the Papa John’s Trophy, and so Worman was able to be involved for the U’s, stepping off the bench in the 65th minute to net the equaliser in the 86th minute of the 1-1 draw. United then picked up the bonus point with a 3-1 penalty shootout success.
“After having a decent spell on loan at St Neots, it was a bit of kick in the teeth knowing I might not be playing football for however long - four weeks, and it could have been a bit longer but it all happened so quick,” said Worman.
“I had a 28-day recall anyway, so they managed to sort that out and I was told I would be on the bench - it all happened a bit quick which is typical football really, it’s always the same.
“Last week I was at St Neots on loan, and thinking I would be there for the rest of the month. But what’s been going on with the new lockdown, I got the opportunity and got a goal which was nice.
“I was just glad to get on, get the goal and obviously we got the win which was good in the end as well.”
The EFL Trophy is becoming a special competition for Worman.
He became the club’s youngest ever player for the U’s in 2017, when aged just 16, and the same cup tournament has provided his first goal for the U’s first team.
“To get the opportunity and score is a good feeling,” he said.
“It just snuck in really. It wasn't the cleanest of strikes, but they all count. I was buzzing to get the goal, it’s something I’ve been working towards for a long time now and it’s good to see that it’s finally paid off.”
And what makes it even more sweeter for boyhood fan Worman, is that it was against Peterborough.
“It’s massive, massive,” he said. “Everyone knows supporting this club these games are massive, even if there aren’t fans here - so it’s good to get one over them.”
