Cambridge City Hockey Club players past and present enjoy plenty of success at European Masters events in Nottingham and Valencia
Cambridge City Hockey Club players past and present were in medal-winning form at the recent Celixir European Masters events.
The two tournaments, which were played in Nottingham and Valencia, were both approved by the International Hockey Federation and featured many Olympic and World Cup athletes who have secured full senior international honours.
And the City contingent enjoyed plenty of success, with five of their eight medals being of the gold variety.
Gareth Andrew was in fine form in front of goal, finding the back of the net on 15 occasions to help England Over-40s claim the top prize.
There was also a pair of gold medals for Clive Biddlecombe and Stephen Graves, both of whom started for the England LX team in their final victory over The Netherlands.
Chanre Bond scored four goals – two of which came in the final against Spain – to help England Over-45s to glory, while Bill Davidson was the joint second highest goalscorer in the competition as England Over-65s beat the Dutch in the final.
Elsewhere, there was a silver medal for Heidi Baber after England Over-35s lost a shoot-out in the final to their Irish counterparts, while it was the same fate for coach Jake Read and his England Over-45s team against The Netherlands.
Stuart Perry was part of the England Spirit of Masters Over-65s to earn a bronze, while umpire Simon Webb took control of two semi-finals before overseeing a bronze medal fixture.
Also, Tyler Deas produced an assured performance in the heart of the defence for Scotland Over-35s, who finished fourth after being on the wrong side of a 5-4 scoreline with Germany.
The club also had Tom Spreckley in action for England at the Under-18 European Championships, where they finished fifth after missing out on a semi-final place as The Netherlands scored with seconds remaining allowing them to leapfrog England into second place in the group.
Spreckley and the team then recovered to won their fifth/sixth place match against Scotland via a shootout, having drawn 2-2 in normal time.
