Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk praises ‘convincing performances’ after wins over Stevenage and Wigan Athletic

Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk has been pleased with the ‘convincing performances’ that his side have produced during the last four days.

After a run of 201 days without a victory in all competitions, the U’s ended that sequence on Saturday with a 2-0 triumph over Wigan Athletic.

And it was the same scoreline this evening away at Stevenage – a night where Monk’s side had to show plenty of defensive steel to make it back-to-back wins going into this weekend’s home encounter against bottom-of-the-table Burton Albion.

“We’ve deserved it, that’s the most pleasing bit. We’ve really deserved it even though I’d have taken a scrappy 1-0 win but we’ve actually put convincing performances in, which is great,” he said.

“If I’m totally honest we already knew that (we had that type of performances in them) but it’s very hard to come out and speak about it when you’re not picking up the right results.

“Results dictate the feeling and perception, but I’ve maintained it and been consistent with it – I know what’s in that changing room and I know on a daily basis what they’re capable of.

“There’s been good periods even in the games before where we’ve shown it, but it’s getting across that line isn’t it? We’ve got across that line with two different types of performances.

“We’ve always known it but that extra bit when you’re losing games, getting wins is what validates it more and gets that confidence and belief even stronger.

“That’s what these two games have hopefully given us and we need to make sure that’s the standard. Of course we won’t be able to maintain that for every game for the rest of the season, but if we can go about it the way we’re currently going about it then we’ll pick up more positive results.”
