Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk does not need ‘reassurances’ over his future as search for first win of the season continues
Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk has insisted that he does not need any ‘reassurances’ about his future at the club.
Last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers stretched United’s winless run of form to nine matches in all competitions since the start of the new term – a sequence that extends to 15 when factoring in the back-end of the previous campaign.
In many ways, the latest loss at Adams Park encapsulated Monk’s predicament. Of those 15 games, the U’s have been beaten on 10 occasions, eight of which have been by a single-goal margin. The other two defeats against Stockport County and Bristol Rovers were 2-0 reverses.
The margins are fine, yet going into tomorrow’s home encounter against Lincoln City, Monk is hopeful that his side will start getting on the right side of them
“They’re a brilliant club – I’ve said that from the start. It’s the first club I’ve been at where everyone is aligned and everyone has got their focus on what the outcome is for the club and where it wants to be,” he said.
“That’s what I brought in to. I’ve been in the game long enough and I don’t need reassurances. I understand where I’m at, what we need to do, how I need to get better and what we need to do on the pitch.
“I’m not going to sit here crying about it or worrying about it. If anything it’s more fuel to the fire and I’m determined to get it right and come through this period to settle things down.
“I’m leaving no stone unturned and working as hard as I can to get the players to work as hard as they can and trust in that.
“I believe that if we play the way we know we can play, there will come a game – hopefully it’s this Saturday – where everything clicks for us and those little things go for us rather than against us.
“I don’t think we’re that far away from it, but often when you’re not winning games – and especially if you’re losing games – the perception is quite different and understandably so, I get that.
“The conversations I have on a daily basis with the club are always positive and they’re always on the same focus, but like anyone, you have to win games and you to get points – that’s probably stating the obvious.”
