Cambridge United’s new head coach Garry Monk looking forward to first Sky Bet League One game in charge against Northampton Town

New Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk is pleased that his maiden game in charge of the club will be at the Cledara Abbey Stadium.

Supporters will get their first look at Monk in the U’s dugout on Saturday when Northampton Town make the relatively short journey down the A14.

And while 66 per cent of United’s 38 Sky Bet League One points this term have been collected in front of their own supporters, the recent home form has been sketchy with one draw and three defeats from the last four outings.

It is a sequence that Monk, who turned out for Swansea City at the Abbey during his playing days, is keen to halt as quickly as possible.

“It’s exciting and I’m glad (his first game is) at home as well, to get a chance straight away to be in front of our fans,” he said.

“I know from speaking with the club and everyone, the attendances and what they’re trying to do to help the club grow, it’s really, really positive.

“I played there a few times and I know what it’s like, you can get the crowd behind you.

“I know every manager says things like this, but I’m really looking forward to playing in front of our crowd.

“It’s a big game. We need to stem this flow of results and put ourselves back on track.

“Having a big crowd and having a crowd behind you (is important). What I love about it is it’s an old school stadium and there are not many of them around.

“It’s a bit like when I was at Swansea and we played at the Vetch (Field). That can be a real advantage when you can get the place going and you're performing well.

“That’s something we’ll be looking to do in all the remaining home games for sure.”
