Cambridge United boss Garry Monk reacts to another winless afternoon following League One defeat at Wycombe Wanderers
For the ninth time this season, Garry Monk faced up to the media on Saturday afternoon to discuss the fact that his Cambridge United side are still searching for their first victory this term.
The weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers stretched United’s winless run of form since the start of the 2024/25 campaign to nine matches in all competitions, with six of those being League One fixtures.
It means the U’s remain rooted to the foot of the table having collected just one point from a possible 18 ahead of back-to-back home encounters at the Cledara Abbey Stadium against Lincoln City on Saturday (28 September) and Rotherham United (1 October).
“I feel like we’ve lost games, it’s not like we’ve been beaten if you can understand what I mean,” said Monk. “It’s not like teams are beating us off the pitch and you can then stand there and say ‘do you know what? They’re just a better team’.
“For all the games we’ve been in and amongst it and it’s the odd goal here and there that’s cost us from getting the result we need.
“But that’s not what people want to hear, I understand that. What can I do? I can control what I can control, the players can control what they can control – they turn up every day, work hard, their attitude is spot on and they go out there and try to deliver a performance worthy of getting points.
“It’s really difficult. The bottom line is we haven’t got enough points, we haven’t won enough games. That has to change, but we’re trying to control what we can control, which our mindset and how we train.
“I’m not going to make any excuses. Yes we’ve got players missing that will add quality to us, but that’s no excuse – we’ve got to get it right. I felt for everyone today that we couldn’t see it out.”
Against Wycombe, Monk’s men fell behind early on to Gareth McCleary’s effort. However, they responded positively and were level with 19 minutes on the clock courtesy of Dan Nlundulu’s first league goal for the club.
And the scoreline remained level at a goal apiece until five minutes from time when Wycombe midfielder Cameron Humphreys, who is on loan from Ipswich Town, got the better of Cambridge goalkeeper Vicente Reyes with a low strike into the bottom corner.
