Cambridge United manager Garry Monk wants his team to be more streetwise in League One ahead of home game against Wycombe after letting midweek lead slip at Rotherham United

Cambridge United boss Garry Monk has urged his team to become more “streetwise”.

They lost 2-1 at Rotherham despite taking the lead through Ryan Loft early in the second half on Tuesday night, a game Monk wants his players to learn from.

“I think we’ve got added fuel to the fire because of Tuesday where it was an opportunity (having) worked so hard to get ourselves into a good position and then not managing those two situations with a bit of naivety,” he said.

“What we have to do is improve that part of our game in terms of a bit of streetwise and understanding that when we’ve worked so hard to get in a really good position, you can’t be giving it away like that.

“We all felt that on Tuesday and it’s probably added motivation to what we’ve already got anyway to go into this.

“It’s a huge challenge for us against Wycombe. We’ve spoken about it a lot, our home games are extremely vital that we can pick up points and put in good performances. Our home games, starting on Saturday, will be huge.

“We’ve found it hard to win games this season, every game's really difficult and when you're presented with an opportunity where you've worked so hard got yourself into a winning position, you can't gift that away.

“We gifted it away on Tuesday, it wasn't that Rotherham really did anything to warrant those goals, it was two moments, like we’ve spoken about a lot this season, it's moments.

“But those two moments there could have been dealt with a lot better, managed a lot better and we need to have that. We've got to have that bit of streetwise, a bit of stubbornness to ourselves, not to concede those type of goals, they're soft goals.”

The U’s will be looking to build on last weekend’s impressive win over Mansfield.

They’re six points from safety and Monk admitted the home fans can play a big part in their remaining matches.

“We know what we're capable of, we've shown it last home game was excellent, really good performance, crowd were right behind us, everything was connected, it was good and we need that even more so coming into this game on Saturday,” said the U’s boss.

“The Abbey is the Abbey. We can make it a real intimidating place. I've said that at the beginning of the season and it typified it last Saturday. It was everyone together, the players, I said terraces to the pitch and the pitch backwards, so that's what we need.

“It'd be huge on Saturday and every remaining home game. Our home games are going to be huge. We need to get as many points from our home games as possible and then go away from home and start adding points as well, but our home games are going to be crucial to achieve what we want to achieve.

“We did that last Saturday and we need to do it again this Saturday, even though it's a massive challenge against Wycombe and the quality that they have. But we're more than capable if we're all all together for the 90 minutes. I think that's the way it should be.

“Whatever happens afterwards, everyone can do what they want, say what they want, whatever it may be, but hopefully during the game, every single minute we're on the pitch, I think it's just full backing behind the players and help them get across the line for the results that we need.”
