New Cambridge United away shirt pays homage to 1990s promotion-winning season
Cambridge United have revealed their new away kit for the 2020/21 season, which is based on a memorable strip of the 1990s.
Working with technical partner hummel, the shirt is a modern twist on the dark blue, light blue half-and-half design of the U's away kit in 1998/99 - the year in which they won promotion from Division Three under Roy McFarland.
It was one of the contenders in a vote put to fans two years ago, finishing a close second to the 1994/95 kit on which the 2019/20 shirt was based.
Gareth Daniels, United’s retail and ticketing manager, said: “Heading into the second season with hummel as our technical partners, we are delighted to finally release our away strip for 2020/21.
“Continuing with the sky, navy and white colours of 19/20 and with a nod to one of my personal, and, fans' favourite away shirts, we’ve added a modern twist to the iconic half-and-half style of 1998-1999. That memorable season of course saw the club win at Hillsborough, before bowing out of the League Cup on a unforgettable night at Nottingham Forest with thousands of United fans packed behind the goal, as well as the year culminating in promotion to Division Two.
“This season’s shirt consists of a fully sublimated front panel with white detailing and a tonal club crest, matched with sky blue shorts and socks. After the successful launch of our new home strip, we look forward to seeing the United colours across the city and at the Abbey once again.”
Like the 2020/21 home kit, the names of club sponsors Mick George will be on the front, Hill on the rear of the shirts and SOS Leak Detection on the back of the shorts.
The kit is available to pre-order at cufcdirect.com or by calling 01223 566500, and will be delivered by the end of July. A date for general sale will be announced in due course.
