Burwell & Exning one wicket short of victory during Onyx League Division One clash with Foxton Granta

Burwell & Exning (212) picked up 15 points from their drawn Onyx League Division One clash with Foxton Granta (129-9) at the weekend.

Having lost a couple of early wickets at Exning Park, half centuries from skipper Paul Summerskill (51) and overseas star Tom Mangelsen (62) helped to move the home side beyond the 200-run mark.

Meanwhile, Max Sargentina (4-34) was the stand-out performer with the ball for Foxton Granta, who struggled for any significant partnerships during their reply.

Several batsmen made good starts without producing big knocks, thanks largely to the bowling performances of Nic Huckle (4-17) and Nick Jones (3-26).

Johnny Atkinson (32) top scored for the visitors, while Henry Campbell (13 not out) and Jake Boyle (4 not out) held out to ensure that their side did not get beaten.

Second-placed Burwell & Exning, who are 20 points adrift of league-leading Saffron Walden after nine games played, will travel to face second-from-bottom Upwood on Saturday (21 June).

On the same day, defending champions Foxton Granta will play host to Old Leysians before taking on Bentley at home in the fifth round of the National Village Cup on Sunday (22 June).

It is now two defeats from three Onyx League Division One outings for Histon (219-9) following last weekend’s seven-wicket loss at home against Wisbech Town (223-3).

Batting first, four Histon batsmen made solid starts but fell short of registering big scores.

Tom Newman top scored for the home team with 48, followed by Cameron Mitchell (34), opener Murray Christie (32) and Jacob O’Sullivan (25).

There was also a swift 20 not out lower down the order from Chetan Chauhan, who only faced 16 deliveries.

However, it proved to be a straightforward target for visiting Wisbech to reel in.

Having already impressed with the bat, Newman also caught the eye with the ball for Histon as he returned figures of 2-29 from his 5.5 overs.

But Histon had no answer to the performance of Wisbech opener Shalin Navishka de Mel.

The 23-year-old Sri Lankan carried his bat throughout the away side’s successful reply, finishing unbeaten with 149 runs to his name from just 88 balls.

The batsman smashed a total of 16 fours and eight sixes on his way to guiding his team to victory in 33.5 overs.

Seventh-placed Histon will seek to bounce back at the first time of asking on Saturday (21 June) when they host Ramsey. The visitors are two places and 10 points better off than Histon in the standings.

Cambridge St Giles (218) halted a sequence of four Onyx League Division One outings without a victory courtesy of Saturday’s 27-run triumph at the expense of Upwood (191).

After St Giles’ opening pair of Jonathan Huggins (18) and Kunal Dabas (12) departed early on, the partnership of Zaheer Hussain (45) and Vansh Bajaj (47) steadied the innings.

Captain Sam Thain (30) and Ashok Singh (22) also made good contributions, but four of the remaining five batsmen were unable to produce double-figure scores as St Giles were dismissed midway through the 57th over.

In defence of their total, St Giles shared the responsibility around as six different bowlers snared wickets.

Charles Bell (4-21) was the pick of the attack during his 8.3 overs with the ball in hand, while Singh (2-39), Hussain (1-27), Thain (1-28), Bajaj (1-31) and Chris Germon (1-37) all got in on the act to bowl Upwood out in 52.3 overs.

St Giles’ third victory of the season has left them eighth in the Division One table, five points clear of Blunham in ninth position.

Thain’s side will aim to rack up consecutive victories on Saturday (21 June) when they travel to face Eaton Socon.

The home side will head into the contest sitting in third place following their victory away at Ramsey last time out.

Old Leysians (250-4) moved out of the Onyx League Division One’s relegation zone following their six-wicket victory at Sawston & Babraham II (246).

The hosting Rams, who have now dropped to the bottom of the table, batted first after winning the toss.

And their innings largely centred around the performances of Miguel-Angelo Machado (118), who scored a ton, alongside Charlie Lewis’ (54) half century.

In terms of the bowling, Old Leysians’ Joseph Gunn-Roberts (4-54) was the star of the attack.

In reply, the combination of opener Mitchell Harrison (93) and Richard Bramley (71) did much of the leg work during Old Leysians’ charge to victory alongside useful knocks from skipper Andrew Gale (43) and Andrew Salvesen (30).

Old Leysians will be on the road again on Saturday (21 June) when they travel to face Foxton Granta, while basement side Sawston & Babraham’s second string travel to face in-form table toppers Saffron Walden.

The Essex-based league leaders have won eight of their nine encounters in 2025.
