Paul Mullin rejects new contract at Cambridge United
Paul Mullin has departed Cambridge United.
The 26-year-old striker turned down the offer of a new contract, and will now head for pastures new.
Mullin scored a U’s league record 32 goals last season to help them to promotion from Sky Bet League Two. The haul was also an EFL League Two goal-scoring record.
U’s head coach Mark Bonner said: “We felt it was a really good offer from our side and the best we could offer. Regardless of where Paul ends up, he goes down in history for what he achieved for us last season and we wish him really well.
“Now we have to work on a replacement in that area of the pitch and it is time to move on.”
On social media, Mullin said: “Thank you to every single person connected to Cambridge United.
“It was an absolute pleasure to play for your club. I would of loved to stay forever. We tried to work things out but ultimately we just couldn’t.
“I owe a lot to The Gaffer, all his staff and especially my team-mates, we achieved something that no one would have ever thought was possible. I will never forget celebrating with the fans on top of the roof after promotion! Having a stand named after me (although just for a few games) and breaking a goal scoring record or 2!
“It’s a shame I never got to share it with the Amber Army more often!
“But until we meet again....your club will always be in my heart!”
