Pupils showcase skills at South Cambs School Sports Partnership girls’ football tournament
Milton Primary had a comeback to inter-school sport action to remember at the South Cambs School Sports Partnership Girls’ Football Competition.
In the first tournament since March 2020, 18 schools sent teams of Year 5 and 6 pupils took part at Histon & Impington Recreation Ground.
A round-robin group stage determined the four qualifiers for the play-off matches.
Linton Heights, Milton Primary, Histon & Impington Brook and Cottenham were the teams that reached the semi-finals.
Cottenham defeated Histon & Impington by virture of a golden goal, while Milton defeated Linton 2-1.
In the final, Cottenham took the lead, but Milton equalised and the teams could not be separated during the golden goal extra-time.
It went to penalties and Milton won with the decisive spot-kick being scored by Emily Moore, with a bit of family rivalry coming into play as her dad is a teacher at Cottenham Primary School.
There were medals for the winners and the runners-up, and a special Spirit of the Games Award for Elsworth Primary, for showing great team spirit, teamwork and respect throughout the competition.
South Cambs SSP manager Claire McDonnell said: “It was a great event played in a really positive and friendly environment.
“We had the Cambridge United Women’s scholars from Cambridge Regional College refereeing all of the matches and they did a really professional job and were great role models for the younger girls.
“Another group of sports leaders from Impington Village College helped with the overall running of the event.
“The Football Fun Factory also attended, with their inflatable dartboard which was a real hit with the girls who loved testing their skills on this between matches.”
