Sawston & Babraham bounce back from opening day Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League defeat with home win over Bury St Edmunds

After their opening-day defeat, Sawston & Babraham (119-2) got off the mark in the 2024 Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League with an eight-wicket home triumph over Bury St Edmunds (118).

Jack Beaumont (3-11), Callum Guest (3-12) and James Vandepeer (3-35) all took a trio of wickets apiece as the Rams ripped through the away side’s batting line-up.

And while openers Guest (7) and Yousuf Choudhary (26) both lost their wickets during the reply, Beaumont (32 not out) and Ben Claydon (42 not out) combined to get Sawston & Babraham over the winning line.

Captain Dan Heath said: “It was really important that we got the win. And it was not just about the win, it was the manner in which we got it that pleased me most.

“The loss on day one at Horsford owed a lot to a lack of preparation. The weather meant we weren’t able to play a friendly or even train on grass, so we were definitely undercooked.

“But to bounce back and chase down the opposition for the loss of just two (wickets) is a real signal of intent.

“The weather meant we were sitting around for two or three hours before we got out there and when that happens it’s easy to be flat. But the bowlers did everything that was asked of them and they didn’t give their batsmen many opportunities.

“It was a good day all round and it shows the quality we have, especially with six or seven squad players still missing.”

Heath’s side will now go in search of back-to-back victories on Saturday (4 May) when they travel to face early-season leaders Copdock & Old Ipswichian before hosting reigning champions Swardeston seven days later.

The skipper added: “Copdock are a good side with a very good overseas player.

“They’ve got plenty of pedigree in their group as well with the likes of Sam Arthurton.

“Then we’ve got Swardeston and we all know the quality that they have.

“But whether we win both or lose both of those games, it will not be season defining.

“We’ve already seen that anyone can beat anyone in this league and I think the side that ends up being champions will probably lose five or six games.

“These are big games coming up though so if we can get some early wins on the board that will give us a boost.”

George Darlow is set to feature at Copdock after missing the Bury clash, while Noah Thain and Charlie Lewis could also both be available.

However, a back injury is expected to keep winter addition Ethan Rice on the sidelines.
