Wrexham 2-2 Cambridge United: Head coach Garry Monk full of praise for players after late Dan Nlundulu penalty secures League One point at the Racecourse Ground

Garry Monk has hailed his Cambridge United players for the ‘united performance’ that they produced during yesterday’s 2-2 draw at Wrexham.

The meeting at the Racecourse Ground saw the side with League One’s best home record so far this term up against a team that had collected a division joint low points tally on their travels.

Nevertheless, Cambridge proved to be one of the weekend’s coupon busters as they returned from Wales with a point to show for their efforts.

After Elias Kachunga had put visiting United ahead in the 20th minute, goals either side of the half-time whistle from James McLean and Steven Fletcher looked to have handed the promotion-chasing hosts a 10th win of the campaign at home.

However, in the final minute of normal time Dan Nlundulu kept his cool from the penalty spot to secure a share of the spoils for Monk’s men, who remain four points from safety.

“I thought they were excellent to a man – the guys that started, the guys that came on, even the ones that didn’t come on,” said the United boss. “It was a really united performance and if anything, there is a tinge of disappointment in the changing room that we didn’t win the game.

“We stayed focused and I thought to a tee we were excellent. To come away from home against a team like this, where they are in the league, I think it’s more proof to the players that even though we are in the bottom four, we don’t feel like we’re a bottom four team.

“If we can keep setting performances like that, which we’re striving for, then we know that we’re a much better team than where we are in the league. Hopefully sooner rather than later we’ll be away from where are in the league at this month in time.”

Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, the Wrexham co-owner, was among those watching the game.

Next up for United is a home encounter against fourth-placed Huddersfield Town on Friday (20 December).
