Rob Huff is primed to pounce in the final round of the 2020 STCC TCR Scandinavia title after two podium-placed finishes at Mantorp Park.

The 40-year-old Cambridge-based driver was competing for the Lestrup Racing Team in the all-new Volkswagen Motorsport Golf GTI TCR, and enjoyed a successful weekend.

Huff qualified in second and third for the two races, and he was second in both races to move to within 14 points of championship leader Tobias Brink.

“I’m very happy with the weekend,” said Huff.

“The team did a fantastic job with the car, and the Lestrup Racing Team Volkswagen did exactly what I wanted both in qualifying and race day. And thanks to Volkswagen Motorsport for turning around a new car for us.

“We had great pace in qualifying; unfortunately we weren’t quite as quick as the Audi here at Mantorp Park, but we knew it was an Audi circuit coming in.

“It’s a quick turnaround to the final race at Knutstorp, again a circuit I’ve never been to, but we know the Audi will get compensation weight based on their results this weekend – that should put us in with a fighting chance of winning both the drivers’ and teams’ titles.”

The performances in the first two races saw him overtake previous points leader Robert Dahlgren’s Cupra in the standings.

But he did not have quite the pace to get past the Audi of Brink.

In the third race, Huff started from seventh on the grid, and quickly worked his way up to fifth on the opening lap. But a long tussle with the Honda of Mattias Andersson hampered his progress and despite passing him to get up to fourth, he was unable to break into the top three.

It means Brink leads the way by 14 points, but with 80 available at the Ring Knutstorp, located in the southernmost part of Sweden, this Saturday (October 10).

“In the first race, Brink’s tyres were fading at the end, and I was closing in on him,” said Huff.

“If we had another two laps, I think we could have got him.

“In race two, not a lot happened from my perspective; we worked hard to try and claw him in, but this time we couldn’t quite get to him.

“I had a good start in race three and made up a few spots, then made a nice move on Mattias and managed to get away from Tobias to make sure we were able to catch up a bit in the points.”
