Rob Langley signs in coup for Cambridge Rugby Club
Cambridge Rugby Club have pulled off a coup by landing Rob Langley.
Director of rugby Richie Williams has secured the services of the 27-year-old back row from Ampthill.
Langley will bring a wealth of experience to the club, and getting hold of his signature for the National League One season was made easier through his ties to the city.
“It was a bit of a coup for us as he lives in Cambridge with his wife, and works at the university sports centre as a duty supervisor,” said Williams.
“He is local, lives in Cambridge and it was just really convenient for him to come and play for us.
“I think he will bring a really nice balance to the current profile of our back row.”
Langley, who is 6ft 4in and 110kg, has made more than 100 appearances in the Championship.
He started his career at Gloucester, and has gone on to play for Plymouth Albion, Nottingham, Hartpury College and Ampthill in rugby’s second tier.
Last season was disrupted by injury at Ampthill, but he played for Northampton Saints Wanderers in the A League.
“He has had a lot of experience despite his age,” said Williams.
“He’s a big ball of energy in pre-season and is a bit of a character as well, so I think he will go really well for us.
“He is a good line-out forward, good at the breakdown and I think the biggest attraction for us was his ability to attack in the wide channels.
“When he is in space, he is very quick and very explosive and has a really good attacking skillset.
“It complements what
we’re trying to do with our attacking game.
“Hopefully he will give us another dimension to how we’re going to play.”
Langley said: “After the unfortunate, premature end of the 2019/2020 due to Covid-19, I am very excited for the new season to start.
“Cambridge RFC have proven themselves to be a good, competitive club with lots of exciting players.
“I greatly look forward to donning the blood and sand jersey this season and bringing my experience from the Premiership and Championship to help the team reach its full potential.”
