Cambridge United end run of back-to-back defeats with victory away at AFC Sudbury

Cambridge United put a sequence of back-to-back FA Women’s League Division One South East defeats behind them with a 2-0 win at AFC Sudbury on Sunday.

After a goal-less first half at the MEL Group Stadium, the U’s broke the deadlock on the hour mark through leading goalscorer Isabella Simmons.

And the lead was doubled within five minutes courtesy of Alysha Stokjo-Down’s ninth goal of the campaign.

Club captain Gisela Otten, who made her 100th appearance as a substitute during the victory, said: “We’ve not won the last two games and they’ve not lost here the whole season, so it’s incredible to get the win and I’m very happy. It’s nice to get the result.

“It was a strong first half. We didn’t score but we were dominant and created way more chances than them. The main message was to keep pushing and we did that.”

On her individual milestone, Otten added: “It’s been five incredible years meeting really cool people. I play the game that I love and it’s just a privilege.”

Eighth-placed United will return to action on Thursday (13 February) when they play host to Real Bedford before the focus switches on Sunday (16 February) to the Cambridgeshire Women’s Invitation Cup at home against Whittlesey Athletic.

The visit of lower-league Whittlesey is expected to see a number of younger players come into the starting line-up.
