Newton goal seals U's victory

Shaun Derry hailed his Cambridge United players as they earned a 1-0 win at Notts County in the Sky Bet League Two last night.

The U’s were in dominant form to extend their impressive away run to six games unbeaten on the road.

It was Conor Newton’s 26th-minute goal that earned United all three points, although they could have had many more given the chances they created during the game.

“It was a great night for us, I thought we played really well,” said Derry. “I thought the first-half performance was close to being pretty much exceptional at our level.

“I thought it was a team that’s starting to really develop and put into processes what we’ve managed to play like for a few weeks now.

“And then in the second half, Notts County came out and gave it a go, and we had to make sure we matched them in the physicality department and we did that as well.

“If I’m being brutally honest, the game could have been out of sight in the first half.

“I thought we were absolutely fantastic in the first half.”

United are back in action at the Cambs Glass Stadium this Saturday, when they host Cheltenham Town.
