Cambridge United brought an end to Bolton Wanderers' unbeaten start to the Sky Bet League One season with a 1-0 win at the Abbey Stadium.

In an absorbing and entertaining match, Shilow Tracey got the only goal as the Trotters became the second side in a week to see their blemish free record brought to an end at the U's, after Burton Albion were dispatched the previous week.

It was a fast start from United, and they almost scored inside the first two minutes.

George Williams hit a cross-cum-shot from out wide on the right that a back-pedalling Bolton keeper Joel Dixon had to fingertip over the bar.

From the resulting corner, United went just as close as Paul Digby was unable to get a clean connection with the header as Antoni Sarcevic cleared easily off the line.

United were putting some great passing moves together and did have the ball in the net in the 15th minute.

Wes Hoolahan slid in a pass to James Brophy on the left, and his easing low cross was put into the net by Joe Ironside, but he had just drifted offside.

That mattered little as three minutes later, United did have the lead.

A crisp passing move saw Hoolahan play the ball wide to Williams, who squared a pass into the area which was met by the arriving Tracey who calmly passed the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Bolton were very tidy in possession but they were not able to carve out as many opportunities as the U's.

Lloyd Jones and Conor Masterson were compact centrally, and well supported by Williams and Jack Iredale, to offered very few glimpses at goal.

Masterson produced a great sliding clearance to deny Eoin Doyle as the Bolton man attempted to burst through, while Bolton's best chance fell to Oladapo Afolayan, who burst into the area and turned a defender before firing over.

There was also a terrific tussle between Ironside and Bolton centre-back Ricardo Santos, with neither player prepared to give a quarter and referee Tom Neild finding it difficult to judge who was the offender and who was the victim, much to the ire of both sets of fans.

It was a theme that was to continue throughout the match, with two early decisions at the start of the second half particularly upsetting the United supporters.

Bolton had made a fast start to the period, hitting the post in the 49th minute. Declan John had got in down the left on the overlap, and Josh Sheehan attempt struck the upright. MJ Williams then had a curling shot from the edge of the area go wide.

There was a great stop by U's keeper Dimi Mitov in the 58th minute.

Afolayan was given too much time and space in the box, and attempted a low shot in the far corner, but Mitov had stood firm and was then quickly down to save with his feet.

The U's went straight down the other end, and after some tricky play in the area, Hoolahan spotted a gap but Dixon was equal to the effort.

Bolton had posed the greater problems in the second half, but United had a good chance in the 79th minute an end-to-end counter-attacking move that resulted in O'Neil's effort from the edge of the box being saved by Dixon.

After a free kick on the edge of the area, Afolayan fired the rebound wide and then, deep in injury time, Alex Baptiste saw an effort deflected wide.

But United stood firm to earn a thoroughly deserved victory for their diligence in defence, at the very least.
