Cambridge United captain Michael Morrison expecting response from derby hammering at Peterborough United when Barnsley visit at the weekend
After last weekend’s derby humiliation, Cambridge United captain Michael Morrison has conceded that the players owe the supporters a performance against Barnsley on Saturday (16 November).
Twelve months on from being thrashed 5-0 at Peterborough United, the U’s returned to London Road looking to make amends.
However, a number of travelling fans headed for the exit before the half-time whistle after seeing their side ship four goals before the break, with the eventual scoreline ending up 6-1 in favour of hosting Posh.
It was a sobering experience for all of those connected with Cambridge, and the skipper is well aware that the squad must ‘work hard’ to win back the support of the fanbase – starting when the in-form Tykes visit the Cledara Abbey Stadium this weekend.
“We didn’t cover ourselves in glory at all,” said Morrison. “It was a really, really disappointing day and we’ve sent a lot of people home unhappy.
“We’re feeling the pain like the fans do. We’re all frustrated, we’re all annoyed and I could use stronger words.
“There’s been a few things said in the changing room that will stay private, but we’re all disappointed. It’s an obvious feeling and I don’t think I’m saying anything that people won’t know.
“This group has faced a lot of adversity since the start of the season and we’ve come back and shown the quality and desire we’ve got.
“I expect us to put a performance in against Barnsley – we owe that to a lot of people.
“It’s probably not going to be enough to get that connection back straight away with the fans, but all we can do is work hard.”
