Cambridge St Giles come out on top over Foxton Granta while Histon see off Ramsey
Cambridge St Giles (350-6) racked up a resounding 133-run victory from their home Whitings LLP Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division One clash against Foxton Granta (217) on Saturday.
Captain Aatish Kean Maharaj starred with both bat and ball for St Giles, while Zaheer Hussain (99) and Sam Thain (60) also added some useful runs higher up the order.
Maharaj, meanwhile, scored an unbeaten 71 runs off just 29 deliveries. He hit eight sixes and one four and there was more big hitting from Craig Brendon Dourado, who scored 36 runs from 17 balls to help set the visitors an imposing target.
For the bowlers, Kaif Iqbal was the pick of Foxton Granta’s attack with three wickets, although his 10 overs did go for an expensive 85 runs.
In reply, the only Foxton Granta batsman to offer up any significant resistance was Chris Pepper with his knock of 86 from 50 deliveries, which featured eight fours and five sixes.
However, his side still ended up well short of their target, thanks in part to four of their line-up being dismissed for ducks.
Fresh from his exploits with the bat, St Giles skipper Maharaj ended his nine overs with figures of 5-30, while Siddhant Pande weighed in with 3-39.
Dourado and Vansh Bajaj snared the other wickets to fall as the away side were bowled out in two balls shy of 40 overs. St Giles will look to continue the positive feeling on Saturday (August 5) when they head to Old Leysians while Foxton Granta go to Newmarket.
Elsewhere, Histon (183-9) came out on top by a 47-run margin against Ramsey (136).
Batting at number four in the order, captain Ed Hyde top scored for Histon with a patient knock of 57 runs from 115 deliveries.
Henry Wilson (44) also contributed some useful runs alongside an unbeaten 18 not out from tail-ender Yahya Qadri, which came from 12 balls.
The wickets were shared around between four bowlers during Histon’s defence as John Turner (3-24) and Qadri (3-25) spearheaded the charge alongside two wickets apiece for Ben Kavanagh (2-34) and Ben Leach (2-34).
Only three Ramsey batsmen managed to score double figures before they were bowled out in 38.5 overs.
Next up for Hyde’s men is a home encounter on Saturday (August 5) against struggling March Town.
Meanwhile, Old Leysians (171) came up 19 runs short during last weekend’s home encounter against Eaton Socon (190).
Bowling first, Andrew Bramley (3-14) was the pick of the hosts’ attack as they bowled out Eaton Socon for less than 200 runs.
However, despite a number of the Old Leysians batsmen making solid starts during the run chase, none were able to rack up a match-winning total.
Jason Simon topped the charts with 35 runs alongside 22 from Bramley and 18 courtesy of Joe Davies.
Old Leysians will hope to bounce back at the first time of asking in at home versus Cambridge St Giles on Saturday (August 5).
