Cambridge City striker George Smith scores twice in Isthmian League North Division victory over Walthamstow

George Smith continued his positive start to life in a Cambridge City shirt with two goals in last night’s 3-1 home victory over Walthamstow.

The striker, who joined the Lilywhites from fellow Pitching In Isthmian League North Division side Maldon & Tiptree during the summer, scored either side of Jack Thompson’s long range effort to help move his side up to 12th in the standings.

Smith’s first goal of the night came after just two minutes before Thompson doubled City’s advantage going into the break.

And the striker went on to make sure of the outcome with his second goal of the evening in the 74th minute, taking his tally for the campaign to nine in all competitions.

Walthamstow substitute Tayo Oyebola pulled a goal back for the visitors nine minutes from time, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

For City boss Jamie Cureton, the result continued his side’s recent positive run of form as they racked up a fifth victory from their last six outings.

Cureton wrote on the social networking site X: “Another really solid performance from start to finish against a good Walthamstow side.

“Our football on the night was a pleasure to watch with some great goals scored, especially @JackT1009 (Thompson). Thank you to our supporters who turn up on a miserable night.”

City are without a game this coming weekend, with their next league fixture scheduled for 15 October when they travel to face 14th-placed Brentwood Town.
