Cambridge St Giles and Histon both chalk up victories despite the rain

Cambridge St Giles (167-2) triumphed by nine runs via the Duckworth Lewis-Stern method away at Eaton Socon (220) in Division One of the Whitings LLP Cambs & Hunts Premier League on Saturday.

Hosting St Giles batted first at the Dry Drayton Cricket Ground and they got off to a positive start courtesy of their opening pair of James Gillespie (21) and Zaheer Hussain (76 not out), who combined to put on 82 runs for the first wicket.

And once Gillespie had fallen, Kunal Dabas came in at number three and kept the scoreboard ticking over with a run-a-ball knock of 40 runs.

The rain then had an impact on proceedings, meaning that when the visitors came out to bat, their target was altered to 230 from 39 overs for victory.

Eaton Socon battled hard in their reply and they got close to winning the contest, but ultimately three wickets apiece for Aatish Kean Maharaj, Vansh Bajaj and Chris Germon helped St Giles to continue their recent positive form.

On Saturday (September 2), St Giles will have home advantage again when they play host to Histon.

Histon (218-6) will head to St Giles on the back of a four-wicket home victory over Foxton Granta (227-9) at the weekend.

Visiting Foxton Granta batted first and they were spearheaded by opener Adam Webster, who top scored with 47 runs from 63 deliveries.

Meanwhile, Jake Allcock (3-23) was the top-performing member of Histon’s bowling attack.

In reply, Histon were set a target of 218 under the Duckworth Lewis-Stern method and they got there with two balls to spare, thanks in part to an unbeaten half century from Mikey Cooper (52 not out).

William Brown also scored a rapid 46 from just 32 deliveries, while Kaif Iqbal (2-31) was the pick of the Foxton Granta bowlers.

Foxton Granta will return to action on Saturday (September 2) away at Eaton Socon.

The rain also had a telling impact as visiting Old Leysians (270-9) suffered a seven-wicket loss at Ramsey (109-3).

The Old Leysians innings centred around number four batsman Andrew Bramley, who hit a double-figure number of fours and eight sixes on his way to a score of 143 runs from 100 balls.

But the rain resulted in hosting Ramsey being set a reduced target of 108 for victory, which they reached with more than three overs the spare.

Joseph Gunn-Roberts, Andrew Gale and James Houlder took a wicket each for defeated Old Leysians, who will return to action on Saturday (September 2) when they play host to bottom-of-the-table Newmarket.
