Cambridge St Giles and Foxton Granta chalk up victories during latest round of Whitings LLP Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division One matches

Cambridge St Giles (187) chalked up a nine-run triumph from their Whitings LLP Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division One clash at home against Newmarket (178) on Saturday.

Batting first, Reuben Thain spearheaded the charge for St Giles with his top score of 76 runs from only 73 deliveries.

Aatish Kean Maharaj also weighed in with a useful 33 runs lower down the order before he went on to do plenty of damage with the ball in hand during the visitors’ successful defence.

Maharaj recorded figures of 4-38 from his bowling stint alongside Zaheer Hussain (3-25) and Vansh Bajaj (2-40) making useful inroads into Newmarket’s batting line-up.

St Giles will have home advantage again on Saturday (August 26) when they welcome Eaton Socon to the Dry Drayton Cricket Ground.

Eaton Socon (214-8) will make the trip to face St Giles buoyed by their 130-run victory over Histon (84) at the weekend.

On what proved to be a tough afternoon for Histon’s batsmen, Ben Leach was their top scorer with just 14 runs to his name.

Prior to that, Oscar Fry (2-41) and John Turner (2-17) took a couple of wickets apiece for Histon as Socon went beyond the 200-run mark during their 50 overs.

Histon will hope that their fortunes improve on Saturday when they play host to a Foxton Granta (208-3) side that recorded a seven-wicket win last time out at the expense of March Town (207).

Having been inserted into the field by their visitors, Foxton Granta skipper Lewys Hill (3-34) – along with Henry Campbell (3-42) and Kaif Iqbal (3-37) – took three wickets as they bowled out March in three balls shy of 50 overs.

And Foxton Granta’s successful run chase was largely down to the combination of Ralph Haywood (101) and Alex Hooley (76 not out), who put on 182 runs for the third wicket.

Elsewhere, 54 runs was the margin of defeat for Old Leysians (205) as they come up short in their pursuit of Southill Park (259-9).

Visiting Old Leysians shared the wickets around their bowling attack after being inserted into the field by the home side.

Andrew Gale (2-36) was the only visiting bowler to take more than one wicket, although during Old Leysians’ run chase both he and fellow opener Dante O’Reilly were dismissed for ducks.

Half centuries from captain Milan Mniszko (62) and Richard Bramley (52) led the recovery, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as Old Leysians fell someway short of their target.

Old Leysians will seek to bounce back on Saturday afternoon when they travel down the A14 to take on Ramsey.
