Cambridge United midfielder George Thomas set for extended spell on sidelines after confirmation of ACL injury

Cambridge United midfielder George Thomas has been ruled out for the ‘long term’ after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injury.

The U’s midfielder sustained the damage after an awkward landing during training on Wednesday – and subsequent scans revealed the news that U’s head coach Garry Monk had feared.

Speaking after today’s 1-1 draw with Northampton Town, Monk said: “George picked up an injury and we were waiting for the scan (results). It’s quite a serious one, it’s his ACL, so that’s a long term one.

“George was going to be a big part of the plans so it’s a blow to lose him.

“I’ve been through that and it’s long term. It was so innocuous – he just jumped for a ball and landed awkwardly.

“We were hoping it was just a hyper-extension, which is generally around 10 days, but unfortunately it’s a bad one.

“I spoke to him yesterday, he’s ok and he’s a good pro and he’ll be back.”
