Cambridge United captain Greg Taylor to leave club after 10 years at the Abbey Stadium.

Cambridge United have confirmed that captain Greg Taylor is to leave after 10 years with the club.

After joining the U’s in the summer of 2013 from Luton Town, the defender departs the Abbey Stadium having made 373 appearances, which leaves him as the 10th highest appearance maker in the club’s history.

Taylor was a mainstay in two promotion campaigns, as well as playing a part in the 2013/14 FA Trophy-winning side.

Injuries in the last couple of seasons have limited his involvement within Mark Bonner’s squad, yet he leaves as an undoubted club legend.

Taylor said: “It’s a bittersweet moment for me. I am sad to be leaving a place that has become my home but I am leaving the club in a better place than when I joined, and I am proud of the part I have played in that.

“I want to say a big thank you to everyone involved with the club, including many who have left during this time. From the owner, directors, manager and playing staff, to the hospitality staff and matchday stewards, thank you. The support I have received from everyone has been something I won’t forget.

“To the fans, thank you for the support. I would like to think you know I have always given 100 per cent every time I put on the shirt. There have been some great memories playing in front of a packed-out Abbey Stadium which I will always look back on.

“I will forever be a supporter of the football club and wish everyone all the best in the future.”

Head coach Bonner added: "Greg Taylor has been instrumental to our successes in recent seasons and has been completely committed to the cause throughout his decade with us.

"Having worked within the first-team set-up for many seasons now, he has been relied upon by multiple head coaches and since my appointment, has been an integral part of the team. As captain, he helped transform our environment and team which propelled us towards promotion.

"I thank him for his contributions, dedication and resilience throughout the past decade and will miss his character around the training ground.

"He deserves huge praise and thanks for his contributions and for how he has helped us become the club we are today. We wish him every success in the future."

Earlier in the 2022/23 season Taylor’s service to the club was rewarded with a testimonial against Premier League side West Ham United at the Abbey Stadium – a game in which he scored from the penalty spot.
