Cambridge United relegated from League One after 2-1 defeat to Burton Albion

Cambridge United’s relegation from League One has been confirmed.

The club’s fate was sealed after today’s 2-1 defeat away at Burton Albion.

While the U’s have battled hard – particularly in recent weeks following the return of Neil Harris as head coach – a return to League Two has looked on the cards for some time.

They failed to win any of their opening nine fixtures and only once all season have they ended a match-week outside of the bottom four.

And to take it into the last game of the season, nothing but a victory would have done for Cambridge at the Pirelli Stadium this afternoon.

As it was, a lacklustre first half came to life in the closing stages with both sides receiving a red card apiece. United forward Ryan Loft was handed his marching orders for an off the ball incident before Burton’s JJ McKiernan joined him shortly after.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson went on to give the home side the lead early in the second half, only for Cambridge’s Elias Kachunga to cancel that out with six minutes remaining.

However, Dylan Williams scored in the third minute of stoppage time to condemn Cambridge to relegation.
