Cambridge United handed trip to League Two side Cheltenham Town in last 32 of Vertu Trophy

Cambridge United have been dealt a lengthy midweek trip in the recently-rebranded EFL Trophy round of 32.

This evening’s draw has handed the U’s a clash at League Two outfit Cheltenham Town for the right to progress through to the last 16 of the competition, which will now be known as the Vertu Trophy.

The Robins were one of four potential away opponents for Cambridge alongside Exeter City, Burton Albion and Colchester United.

While an exact date for the clash at Whaddon Road is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to take place the week commencing 9 December.

Cambridge have lost on their last four meetings with Cheltenham, with their last victory in Gloucestershire coming in December 2021 when a Joe Ironside hat-trick helped to inspire a memorable 5-0 triumph.

Garry Monk’s side reached this stage of the tournament as group runners-up after their 1-0 win over Chelsea Under-21s earlier this month was followed by Charlton Athletic getting the better of Bromley.
