Cambridge United complete loan signing of former West Ham United player Emmanuel Longelo from Birmingham City

Cambridge United have secured the season-long loan services of Emmanuel Longelo from Birmingham City.

The left wing-back, who has become United’s 11th addition of the summer transfer window, featured on 20 occasions in all competitions last season as the Blues were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship.

Prior to joining Birmingham on a permanent deal 12 months ago, the 23-year-old had risen through the ranks at Premier League side West Ham United, for whom he made one senior appearance during an EFL Cup tie against Hull City.

U’s head coach Garry Monk said of his latest recruit: “It’s a welcome addition. I’ve always said if we can strengthen and add quality – players that we think will really help us over the course of a season – then we’ll do it and Manny will definitely do that.

“He’s got some really good attributes, especially offensively. His profile is exactly what we spoke about in the summer – athletic, forward thinking and front footed. That can only help us – it’s a really good addition for us.”

Longelo added: “I am hungry to play, make a difference and show the club and the fans what I can do.”

“I have known about the gaffer for a long time and I am excited about playing under him – I think we will work well together.”

Longelo, who will wear the number 45 shirt, could make his debut on Saturday at home against Blackpool alongside fellow new recruit Josh Stokes.
