National Village Cup winners Foxton Granta aiming for top four finish in Onyx League Division One

Foxton Granta have become used to challenging towards the top end of the Onyx League Division One table – and that will once again be their target in 2025.

Champions in 2023, last year Lewys Hill’s side finished in third place.

And a spot within the league’s top four is the target that has been laid down by the captain.

Hill said: “A few results didn’t go our way last season but we were always in the contest to win each game. We were always in and amongst games.

“We’ve been up towards the top of the league most seasons but obviously you can’t win it every year.

“We’ve just got to make sure we’re competitive each week and if we can get down to the latter stages then we’ll see what we need to do from there. We’ll be aiming at the top four at least.”

While 2024 did not deliver another league trophy, it was nevertheless one of the most memorable campaigns in the club’s history.

In front of a crowd of around 2,000 people at Lord’s, Foxton Granta lifted the Voneus National Village Cup trophy.

They begin their defence on 27 April away at Buckden, although Hill is well aware how difficult the title is to win back-to-back.

“It was an incredible day. Foxton had obviously got to the final before and lost, so to get over the line was an unbelievable experience,” he said. “We all had friends and family there so it was really special. It was probably the biggest achievement in cricket for everyone in the squad.

“Of course it would be fantastic to defend it, but I’ve looked at the names on the cup and not too many have been able to win it back-to-back.

“To be one of a few teams to do it gives us motivation, but we know how tough it is. We took each game as it came last year and we’ll do the same this year.”

Foxton Granta are set to begin their 2025 league campaign on Saturday (19 April) away at Cambridge St Giles.
