Promising Cambridge United defender Liam Bennett will continue his development out on loan next season.

The 20-year-old full-back had a breakthrough campaign during the 2021/22 season, making a total of 10 first-team appearances, five in the Papa John's Trophy and five in Sky Bet League One.

He will now head to League Two side Walsall for 2022/23, with a recall option in January 2023 put into the deal.

United head coach Mark Bonner said: "We are really pleased to have agreed for Liam to join Walsall, who approached us about this possibility very soon after the conclusion of last season.

"Following a positive end to the campaign we believe this is an excellent opportunity for Liam to continue the progress he has made so far and we are thrilled that the opportunity of playing League Two football is a possibility for one of our young players.

"Liam has a good challenge ahead of him to impress his new management team and teammates to try and secure as many on-field minutes as possible in what will be a really valuable part of his long term development."
