Cambridgeshire Under-14 Boys share title with Middlesex counterparts after rain forces Barnard Castle final to be abandoned

Despite the rain being a source of frustration, Cambridgeshire Under-14 Boys still enjoyed a successful trip to Barnard Castle for the annual BA Cricket Festival.

When the weather allowed, Cambridgeshire were able to chalk up some impressive results in the 10-team competition, which in turn saw them qualify for the final against Middlesex.

However, the rain duly returned and with no alternative but to abandon the encounter, the two counties were announced as joint winners of the festival.

When Cambridgeshire did manage to get out on the pitch they chalked up a victory over neighbouring Huntingdonshire with contributions from Chris Smith (32), Lucas Mudkavi (29) and Alexi Demetriou-Foale (26).

The following day the team recorded a score of 304-8 against Cricket Wales, which featured a second century of the season for captain James Mitchell and the only one that was scored at the festival.

In reply, the Welsh youngsters could only muster a score of 176 all out as Will McIntosh helped himself to four wickets.

Middlesex batted first and scored 234-6 from their 40 overs, but before Cambridgeshire could respond rain started to fall and with the outfield particularly wet, the decision was taken to call the contest off.

Elsewhere, Cambridgeshire Under-13 Boys enjoyed a positive end to their summer campaign.

They made the short journey to Bury St Edmunds for a two-day encounter against Suffolk and ran out winners by a three-wicket margin.

On day one there was some notable bowling from Cambridgeshire’s Ollie Hayes and Sam Fisher, who took four and two wickets respectively.

However, having bowled out Suffolk for 251, Cambridgeshire’s response was far from ideal as they scored just 107 runs from 31.1 overs.

Suffolk declared on day two after lunch on a score 211-7, but on this occasion Cambridgeshire returned to form with the bat.

Jack Carnegie was the star of the show with an unbeaten 163, while Henry Cotton weighed in with a useful 60 runs to secure Cambridgeshire the victory.

There was also a positive conclusion for Cambridgeshire Under-16 Boys in the ECB Cup as they beat Norfolk by 116 runs.

Winning the toss and batting first, Seb Harrison and Pi Codrington got the team off to a positive start on a good wicket. The momentum continued with Alex James and Codrington, James scoring a busy 52, before an impressive knock of 38 from youngster Arjun Kurade got the team up to 219 runs.

A good opening spell from Adam Gardner and Aarnavh Trevedi, followed by Freddie Higgins and the reliable Aditya Datta, meant that Norfolk never threatened.

Higgins and Trevedi both took three wickets on the way to victory.
