Will Wand chuffed with Cambridge’s display to beat National League One leaders Rosslyn Park
Will Wand was delighted that the Cambridge backs were able to play a pivotal part in the 34-29 win over leaders Rosslyn Park in National League One.
The forwards have been the dominant force this season, with hooker Ben Brownlie top of the division try rankings with 16, but it was the turn of those outside of the pack to excel last Saturday.
Wand weighed in with two tries, Matt Hema and Joey Patrick got one apiece, and there was also a penalty try and seven points from the boot of Marc Koteczky, as they sent Park to just their second defeat of the season.
“It was a brilliant win,” said 19-year-old Wand.
“I’m just proud of the boys really. I felt like we went out there and delivered. It was a tough battle but I felt like we pulled through right to the end.
“I couldn’t be more chuffed. Last week we got a draw [against Taunton] and the week before it was a loss, but we came out here with no pressure and just managed to get a good performance in, and I’m proud of the boys.”
“Going into the new year, it’s good, especially in the last game of the year at home. The crowd gave us all the energy, we fed off that and the buzz as well.”
Wand was playing in his favoured position of outside centre, and got Cambridge’s second and third tries, taking his tally for the campaign to three.
“The first try I just managed to slip through to get the try – it was good. The second try was all the work of Joe Green.
“It’s my first senior season so it’s been challenging for me personally but week in, week out on the training paddock you’ve just got to learn as much as you can and hopefully translate it to the game.”
Cambridge play their last game of 2021 away at near-neighbours Bishop’s Stortford this Saturday (December 18).
“It will be a good game and we’re looking forward to that,” added Wand.
“Coming off a good win this week, we’ve got to be confident.
“We’ve just got to maintain that performance going into next week.”
