Cambridge University footballers experience mixed fortunes during Varsity Matches against Oxford University at Cledara Abbey Stadium
The Varsity Match bragging rights went the way of Cambridge University Association Football Club’s Women’s team last Friday.
Up against their rivals from Oxford at the Cledara Abbey Stadium, Cambridge chalked up a 3-0 victory.
Centre-back Allie Rennie was the hero for Cambridge as she helped herself to two of the three goals on the night.
The scoring was opened by central midfielder Ella O’Connell, who applied the finishing touch to Alexia Dengler’s pass.
And then it was over to Rennie, with her first goal coming before the break when she turned in O’Connell’s corner.
The returning Blues player then completed her brace just after the hour mark with a powerful effort from distance.
However, there was heartbreak for the men’s team as they were beaten in a penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 in 90 minutes.
Having fallen behind early on, Cambridge captain Cai La Trobe-Roberts came up trumps with an equaliser goal in the 73rd minute.
But it was Oxford that came out on top during the subsequent shootout 3-0 as the Cambridge trio of Denis Ozer, Aaran Mehmood and Masako Kawaski were all denied.
