Cambridge City Hockey Club celebrate Women’s fifth team being crowned East Hockey League champions

There were title celebrations at Cambridge City Hockey Club last weekend as the women’s V team were crowned East Women’s League Division 3 North West champions.

The squad wrapped up first place courtesy of a 3-0 victory at second-placed Ely City.

Anna Gomez broke the deadlock after she rode a number of tackles and then slammed the ball home.

Stephanie Birkwood doubled City’s lead with a penalty corner before Gomez made sure of the outcome with her second goal of the contest.

Captain Laurel Tully said of her side’s success: “The team thoroughly deserve it.

“They have worked hard to form a truly formidable unit that celebrates and supports one another.”

Elsewhere, Cambridge City remain in Vitality England Hockey Women’s Division 1 South relegation danger following their 1-1 draw at Surbiton II.

Holly Dean was on target for second-from-bottom City, who are four points from safety with a quartet of matches remaining.

Mid-table Cambridge City II played out a 3-3 draw from their East Women’s League Premier Division clash at Broxbourne.

City made a positive start through May Busher’s first-time reverse stick strike, only for the hosts to respond with three unanswered goals.

However, Emma Owens got the visitors back into the contest before Megan Higgs’ composed finish earned them a share of the spoils with time running out.

Cambridge City III continue to lead the way in the East Women’s League Division 1 North by a single point following their 3-0 home win over Cambridge South.

Millie Ely’s opening goal sent City into the break 1-0 up, with the lead eventually being doubled after the restart by Chanre Bond’s reverse stick effort.

Fran Burn then saw a number of attempts kept out by the South goalkeeper, but Ely eventually settled any doubts over the outcome with her second goal of the game, which came after she had dribbled beyond six defenders.

In the England Hockey Men’s Division 1 North, Cambridge City were made to pay for a batch of missed chances in their 4-1 home loss to Bowdon.

After an early opportunity went begging for City the visitors went in front via a close-range deflection.

As the first half wore on Nat Farrant and Ben Dudgeon both spurned chances, and they proved to be crucial moments because after the restart Bowdon scored three quickfire goals to secure their victory.

George Bucknall eventually got City off the mark in the dying seconds, but the damage had long been done.

In the East Men’s League Division 4 North West, Cambridge City VI suffered a 3-2 defeat from their trip to Ely City II.

Goals from Nigel Anns and Nigel Gadsby were not enough for City, who have dropped to second and been replaced by club-mates Cambridge City V at the top of the table.
