Cambridge Union talks start with Judge Judy
The Cambridge Union has announced its line-up of speakers for the 2019-20 academic year.
Getting the series of talks and debates under way is American media personality, Judge Judith Sheindlin (of Judge Judy fame), on Saturday (October 5) in an event open to all students, parents and friends.
Other speakers will include Saudi Arabian human rights activist Ensaf Haidar, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and Iraq War whistleblower Katharine Gun.
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, will speak on Monday (October 7) in a members-only event.
Following the open period, the theme of whistleblowing is continued with a whistleblowers panel featuring Edward Snowden, Ewen MacAskill and Daniel Ellsburg on November 27.
From the musical world, the union will be welcoming Dua Lipa, the most streamed female artist in the world, and NAO, a breakthrough act who has recently received a Brit nomination.
Political heavyweights include Jorge Jraissati, Venezuelan member of the opposition; Michelle Bachelet, the seventh United Nations high commissioner for human rights; and Ban Ki-Moon, who has been confirmed to speak in 2020.
