In pictures: Ely Cathedral transformed for ‘Crown and Coronation’
Crown and Coronation, a “spectacular, immersive, light and sound show”, can be viewed this week at Ely Cathedral.
Following its launch at the Tower of London in November last year, the cathedral will be one of the first venues to showcase this new creation which celebrates the spectacle and significance of the Crown Jewels and the Coronation ceremony.
Visitors to the event will get to experience the interior of Ely Cathedral completely illuminated in a kaleidoscope of huge, colourful light projections depicting more than 1,000 years of the British monarchy.
The project was created by Historic Royal Palaces, in partnership with Luxmuralis, the artistic collaboration of artist Peter Walker and composer David Harper.
Lesley Ann Thompson, director of communications and commerce at Ely Cathedral, said: “The entire experience is fully immersive.
“The spectacular light show is accompanied by the most incredible selection of music which completely harmonises and complements the visual sensation leaving you utterly in awe of everything you can see and hear.
“The nave is the most breathtaking in terms of visuals as the whole area has been cleared in order to show the magnificence of the visuals being projected onto the medieval pillars.
“The cathedral provides the most amazing backdrop for this – it would be hard to imagine it could be as impactful in any other location.”
The display, featuring images of King Charles and Queen Camilla, was given added poignancy following the confirmation from Buckingham Palace on Monday night that His Majesty the King has been diagnosed with cancer and has begun treatment, an announcement that put the monarchy in the minds of many.
Crown and Coronation is embarking on a UK tour throughout 2024. The display at Ely Cathedral began on Tuesday (6 February) and runs every evening until Saturday (10 February).
Tickets are still available and some will be available on the door, although it is recommended to buy them in advance as some sessions are already sold out.
