Loukas Morley exhibition ‘Embodied Energy’ heads to ArtSpace, Cambridge

Embodied Energy, an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Cambridge-based artist Loukas Morley, runs at Cambridge ArtSpace from tomorrow (Saturday 1 March) to 20 April.

The Portugal Place gallery will be showcasing a series of new paintings inspired by light, just in time for spring, as well as works spanning more than 30 years that reflect Morley’s life-long interests in sustainability and the environment.

Curator Anna Dempster, a University of Cambridge academic “discovered” Loukas Morley through Cambridge Open Studios.

“I was recommended to see his studio by another artist,” she recalls, “and it’s quite a remarkable place – it’s really tucked away. But when you get there, it’s quite a magical experience.

“It’s not often open to the public because it is a working studio, and I got talking with him and he has a really interesting philosophy to his work and to the way he creates it.

“And the more I got to know him, the more I was completely fascinated, both by his work and his kind of underlying philosophy – and I basically got to the point where I was like, ‘I think more people should know about his work, and more people should be able to see it’.

“I just wanted more people to be able to see his work, and appreciate the fact that we have such amazing talent on our doorstep.”
