The programme includes choral music from the Slavic tradition with settings of reflective texts, those of shared heritage, as well as some more light-hearted pieces from Ukraine, Poland, Moravia, Yugoslavia and Russia. The composers include Dvorak, Gorecki, Seiber and Chesnokov, among others, as well as a Ukrainian folk song.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The power of music and art to inspire and comfort has never been more important than now, against a backdrop of war, famine, ecological destruction and economic hardship causing misery around the globe.

“As we have seen afresh so terribly in eastern Europe over the last year, a shared linguistic heritage is no guarantee of friendly relations between countries and peoples. Language can divide as much as it can unite, but we hope that our exploration of the musical and cultural history of the Slavic world is a testament to the way in which music, as the only truly shared language, is a powerful means of reminding us all of our common humanity.”

Tickets are £12, or £8 for students £8 and under-18s can go for free. Visit ticketsource.co.uk/new-cambridge-singers or buy on the door.
