Review: Larry Dean at Cambridge Junction
Scottish comedian Larry Dean performed at the Junction’s J2 on Thursday, February 24, the second date of his Fudnut tour.
Coming out to an enthusiastic welcome from the packed house, Larry immediately ‘picked on’ a few members of the audience, assuring them that he was a nice guy really and telling them not to be scared. He mainly focused on a couple who had been married for 20 years who had met through an ad in The Guardian newspaper. He was to return to them later.
Larry then introduced his support act, Adam Hess, whose set could probably best be described as ‘intense’ - although it certainly had some very funny moments, not least his comments on his grandfather’s fringe, train and toilet etiquette and the date he’d been on the previous evening - as well as his little black book full of interesting, thought-provoking and often hilarious observations.
Larry came back out after the interval and drew numerous laughs with his anecdotes - which included a harrowing experience in Abu Dhabi - his musings on being a homosexual and on homosexuality in general and his spot-on accents and impersonations, which included Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Gollum from Lord of the Rings.
His English and American accents were highly amusing and when he brought up the subject of a Nigerian housemate he used to have, Larry assured the audience that he wasn't going to do the accent. “We’ve got Guardian readers in,” he joked.
The 32-year-old succeeded in keeping the energy level up as he spoke about, among other things, relationships, his own insecurity, being from Glasgow and comparisons to Kevin Bridges. Towards the end, one half of the couple he’d picked out right at the start had a timer go off on her phone, causing Larry - and indeed many of us - to wonder what it was for.
The lady refused to say, leading Larry to suggest that he was going to start an Instagram group for people who attended the gig to try and guess what it had been for. He finished the gig, commenting on its “weirdness”, and kindly made himself available for fans to chat to and have photographs with immediately afterwards.
I thought Larry Dean was an outstanding comedian the first time I caught him on TV’s Live at the Apollo and tonight’s show undoubtedly solidified that opinion. Would love to go and see him again.
