Stunning light show of children’s art to illuminate Senate House in Cambridge
Cambridge’s Senate House will be transformed by an extraordinary projection as part of Cambridge Music Festival tonight (Friday, November 11), for the second night running.
Catch the show this evening between 4.30pm and 9pm when artwork from children at four city primary schools is projected onto the walls of the building every 20 minutes.
The festival commissioned Cambridge community artist Hilary Cox-Condron to lead workshops in four local schools: the Castle School and Year 3 pupils at Arbury, Galfrid and St Matthew’s Primary Schools. More than 200 pupils created their own exuberant artwork inspired by the creatures featured in Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, which was thenused to create a spectacular light show by the Newcastle-based video design specialists NOVAK.
Last night their new installation illuminated the building’s neo-classical façade accompanied by excerpts from the acclaimed Kanneh-Mason family‘s recording of Carnival of the Animals following Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason’s performances at the festival last year. It will be repeated tonight.
Artistic Director Justin Lee said: “Cambridge Music Festival has been promoting concerts in the city for 30 years, but this is the first time we’ve commissioned something on this scale. This project signals our ambition not only to bring the very best musicians to Cambridge, but also to engage with the broadest possible audience on our doorstep to bring one of our best-loved pieces of music to life.”
Artist Hilary Cox-Condron said: “I was thrilled to be asked to lead these workshops with four local schools, and absolutely blown away by the enthusiasm and joy as the children created their artwork in response to the music. We are all really looking forward to seeing this iconic building – in a part of the city that can feel inaccessible to so many of us - transformed by the children’s wonderful artwork.”
