What’s on for October half-term and Hallowe’en 2024 in Cambridgeshire




There’s plenty of spooktacular events going on this October half-term to keep the kids entertained.

From pumpkins, woodland trails and seasonal crafts to ghost hunting and battling zombies - there is something for children of all ages in the run up to Hallowe’en in Cambridgeshire.

Fearsome family fun day

There’s some half-term spookiness going on at the Museum of Zoology in Cambridge. Join in with some creepy crafts and have a go at the Hallowe’en quiz. Plus there is a chance to handle some real specimens from the museum with expert volunteers. The craft session will take place in the Discovery Room in the Lower Gallery. The activities are free and there is no need to book.

Pick up a pumpkin

The Milton Maze has around 60,000 pumpkins waiting to be picked this year with a range of different types and sizes to choose from - white pumpkins, warty pumpkins, stripey pumpkins and even pink pumpkins. Included in the entry ticket are twice-daily Hallowe’en Spectacular Shows with popular entertainers, including the one and only Jez’o. In the field of fun, little ones can go wild on the wooden maze, zip wire, inflatables, gold mine, duck racing, go karts, tyre mountain, crazy golf and farm skittles.

There is a selection of street food vans serving delicious options, including:

Loaded Dog Company - also offering bacon rolls and vegan options.
The Greek – for a selection of Greek Gyros.

All aboard the Halloween Express

Chugging deep into the estate woodland at Audley End, the Hallowe’en Express takes passengers to a spooky grotto. Little ones will get to meet fun witches and monster friends in a non-scary experience before returning to enjoy making a potion pouch in the craft cabin.

Visitors can then venture into the fairy and elf walk where some of the resident fairies and elves have decorated their homes with Hallowe’en trinkets and there will be a chance to explore the adventure play area.

Spooky scavenger hunt and punt

Quietly find your way around Cambridge for all sorts of creepy scares and tales with Traditional Punting Company’s scavenger hunt. Enjoy a chauffeured punting tour of Cambridge while completing a Hallowe’en activity book to find the answer for a sweet treat. Then take to the streets, where you might come across a ghost or two that haunts the streets along the way. The city part of the scavenger hunt will take you past the likes of St John's College, the oldest church in the city and the market square to discover our spooky past.

Hallowe’en family rave

Combine Hallowe’en-themed crafts and fancy dress with an old school rave for the most unusual Hallowe’en event on this half term. The Cambridge Junction is hosting the Big Bish Little Fish family rave with house music legend Stuart Patterson and old school/drum and bass veteran DJ Trax who will be playing (grown up) tunes to the family ravers. The event will also feature themed crafts, a snow machine, giant balloons, glitter cannons, a bubble machine, club lighting (no strobes), a giant mural and the parachute dance. Hallowe’en fancy dress is optional (but encouraged.)

Hallowe’en headwear making

As part of the Let’s Go Circular sustainability festival at the Grand Arcade, there will be a craft session from The Junk Trunk where everyone can craft their own Hallowe’en wreaths and circular headwear from their treasure trove of trinkets. Perfect for wearing to trick or treating later on.

With the concept of circular economy in mind, The Junk Trunk has designed this workshop by using materials that have been sourced as part of a project to help reduce the amount of commercial waste that ends up in landfill.

The treasure trove is filled with variety of sparkly offcuts, toys that didn't make the shelf, trinkets thrown out but never used. Alongside all these one-of-a-kind treasures are ethically-sourced embellishments and a beautiful selection of haberdashery that can be used

National Trust’s Hallowe’en events

Anglesey Abbey

A Hallowe’en trail will run from 26 October to 3 November. Brave the haunted woods to help the witch lift a spell. Explorers will be given a torch to find hidden clues, and there will be some spooky challenges along the way, including a bat cave, a cauldron and some magic mirrors. Booking is advised. Trails are £6 per child, which includes a clue card to fill in, as well as a prize at the end. Normal admission to the estate applies.

Wicken Fen

There are relaxing boat trips into the fen, as well as bike hire available. For teenagers, a smartphone photography workshop is running on Wednesday 30 October - no previous experience is necessary, and ticket price includes a ‘phone scope’ to take home. On Thursday 31 October and Friday 1 November, there will be a spooky spider painting workshop. Don’t miss the Super Spider Trail for a chance to learn more about eight species found on the fen, with challenges and games along the woodland walk.

Wimpole Estate

The Big Tree Climbing Company will be back to help visitors explore Wimpole Estate from the treetops. Using ropes and harnesses, climbers can ascend into the canopy of a tree and instructors will teach you how to enter a tree’s canopy using ropes, knots, and karabiners, while being securely attached in a harness at all times. Each session is run for a maximum of eight people. Pre-booking is essential, £25 per person for a one-hour tree climbing session (for ages 6 or above).

For those who want to keep their feet on the ground, there is an enchanted woodland trail until 3 November, fairy door making on 29 October, willow wand making on 30 October, and pinecone animal making on 31 October.

Rumble Live Action Gaming, an award-winning attraction, has announced the return of its Hallowe’en-themed missions during this year’s October half term at both Grafham and Rutland Water.

The adventures, suitable for children and adults alike, will be included in any sessions booked between Saturday 26 and Thursday 31 October.

Players can take on challenges like Zombie Apocalypse, where they must collaborate to defeat zombies with 10 times their health, and a Red Light, Green Light bonus mission inspired by Netflix hit series Squid Game, where the aim is to reach the safe zone without being caught by the creepy doll Young-hee.

Each one-hour session features head-to-head team battles and the popular sniper games, utilising state-of-the-art laser rifles with a range of more than 200 metres and holographic red dot sights.

Sessions start at £18 per player, with discounts available for larger groups of 12-plus players.
