The popular chain on Green Street is one of a select few branches nationwide now offering a special beer & burger deal every Wednesday.

On Wednesday, March 7, Bill’s gave away 50 free burgers to the first 50 customers in its Cambridge branch, starting at 12pm.

The promotion was carried out to launch Burger Wednesday, an offer which allows customers to purchase a beer and a burger for only £10 on Wednesdays between 7pm and 11pm.

The three burgers given away on the day were the classic Bill’s burger, the naked burger – a burger with no bun – and the veggie halloumi burger.

Ben Davey, manager at Cambridge Bill’s, noted that the choice of burger among the first 50 customers on March 7 was different than what one might expect, telling the Cambridge Independent:

“Interestingly enough, I was just talking to the chef about how the split was. We expected there to be about 40 Bill’s burgers and 10 halloumi, but actually it wasn’t that way at all.

“We served 22 halloumi burgers, two naked burgers and the rest were Bill’s burgers. I didn’t expect there to be almost an even split – that really surprised me.”

Ben continued: “There was an amazing turnout. We expected that it would take us a couple of hours to go through it, but we used all 50 burgers within 15 minutes, which was much better than we could ever have hoped.

“There was a great buzz as well. There were quite a few people who came in who hadn’t been to us before – or who hadn’t been to us for a while – and we got great feedback.

“They got to see the quality of our product, the portion size, and we talked about our new offer on a Wednesday evening, which is the burger and a beer for £10.”

The burgers which are part of the weekly offer are the same three which were given away on March 7 and the beer is the house beer, which is Bill’s beer and Bill’s IPA.

Ben said: “I think it’s fantastic value because it’s saving you about £4 from the normal menu, and burgers and beer go really well together.”

The verdict on the food:

I had a Bill’s burger with chips and was impressed by the quality of the meat – which is not frozen and brought in fresh every day – and the portion size.

As a starter, I would also highly recommend the Dakkochi Chicken Skewers with spicy Korean barbecue glaze, spring onion and lime, and the Crispy Calamari with garlic and lemon mayonaise. Both were superb.
