El Paraiso SoPal Manor offers an authentic taste of Mexico in the Fens

There aren't too many options when it comes to authentic Mexican food in Cambridgeshire, so it was a real treat to find this culinary gem by the side of Ely Road in Chittering.

Called El Paraiso SoPal Manor, the restaurant - part of a small hotel - is run by Maria, who hails from Mexico, and her talented Polish chef, Pavel.

The inviting interior, with its red and white walls, is matched by the friendliness of the staff, while the menu offers various Mexican dishes, as well as more familiar British favourites.

My personal highlight, food-wise, was the three Mexican tacos, one of each (chicken, beef and pork), which came served with salsa, soured cream and guacamole (three things I simply cannot do without when it comes to Mexican cuisine), while my wife also enjoyed her shredded beef, which came with coriander, avocado, cream and salsa.

The restaurant also offers tamales, a popular Mexican staple, and its British options include the English breakfast and the full Sunday roast.

When it came to pudding, I went for the chocolate brownie (a recent addition to the menu) which included some interesting and very nice chocolate-flavoured 'fluffy' garnishes. My wife very much enjoyed her assiette of pear, which was simpler than the name might suggest.

Price-wise, El Paraiso SoPal Manor is reasonable - certainly in line with other restaurants in the area - and the portions are generous.
