Pint Shop’s delivery curry: a feast direct to your door
Offering an interesting and varied menu, Cambridge eatery Pint Shop has expanded its delivery service nationally.
Owner Richard Holmes said: “We launched our ‘Pint Shop at Home’ offer last April. It wasn’t something we’d ever considered but the pandemic changed everything overnight for our business.
“We lost our entire income and had to adapt very quickly. It’s evolved a lot since then, and we’re super proud of what it looks like today.
“We’re delivering locally in Cambridgeshire six days a week and we’ve recently launched a twice-weekly national delivery service.” He added: “The menu consists of our ‘oven ready’ meals and ‘DIY Kits’ with the contents changing every few weeks.
“Some of the most popular dishes include our curry nights and our ‘date night dinners’, which have been put together as a feasting treat and to try to recreate eating out but at home. Also super popular are our award-winning Scotch eggs and triple-cooked chips and curry sauce.”
We put it to the test...
The entire meal arrived in one handy-sized and well-presented box. Inside, it was wonderful to see such attention to detail, from the garlic and coriander butter that accompanied the naan bread – designed to melt on top of the bread in the oven – to the packet of onion salad (onion, dill, mint leaves and cucumber) to enjoy with the poppadums.
The samosas and onion salad came vacuum-packed to preserve the freshness, and the meal also included instructions (it was very easy to prepare) and just the right amount of mango chutney and mint yoghurt.
There was even Bombay mix to try while the starter, two vegetable samosas, cooked in the oven – in hindsight, I probably should have grilled them to make them crispier.
The two main dishes were murgh malai chicken tikka with spinach makhani sauce and chole chickpea chana masala, which I admit I’d never tried before.
I enjoyed the chickpea chana masala – the potatoes were a nice touch – but I preferred the sumptuous chicken dish, especially as the chicken had a lovely chargrilled texture to them as they drowned in the thick, creamy sauce. Another chicken option is chicken jardallo ma murghi.
The delicious yellow basmati rice that accompanied the two dishes included cardamom pods, of which I’m a big fan. The meal was designed for two people and was definitely sufficient – I was so full afterwards that there was no need for pudding.
Overall, this filling meal comes highly recommended.
