Review: Honest Burgers offers its seasonal Christmas burger

Honest Burgers, whose Cambridge branch is located on Corn Exchange Street, across the road from the Cambridge Corn Exchange, is offering a special festive menu for Christmas 2023.

The Christmas burger consists of beef, bacon, deep-fried Président camembert, cranberry sauce and rocket, and the camembert is coated in a poppyseed crumb.

I went along to sample the Christmas burger, which was an option on the special Christmas set menu – a burger, soft drink, rosemary salted chips, a side and sauce for £20, which I think is very competitive. You can pay a bit more for an alcoholic beverage, if you wish.

I had never had a burger with cranberry sauce before, but I have to say it was delicious. It was nice enough on its own, but the combination of cranberry sauce and camembert works really well together.

As a side I went for the onion rings, which were very crispy and tasty, and for a sauce I opted for the BBQ mayonnaise, which I’m going to try and recreate at home – that’s how nice it was. I paid a bit extra for the bacon gravy, but it was definitely worth it. The overall dish was very filling.

For those who don’t eat meat, there is a festive vegan option too, comprising a Beyond Meat burger, La Vie bacon, Honestly Tasty ‘Shamembert’ cheese, shoestring fries, cranberry sauce and rocket.

The Christmas and Vegan Christmas specials are available at all 40 Honest Burgers restaurants nationwide until December 24.

Adam Layton, Honest Burgers head of food, said: “We haven’t changed our Christmas special for 12 years and there is a reason for that: Honest fans love it and we know this year will be no exception.

“But we’ve levelled things up on our vegan offering this Christmas. Honestly Tasty’s Shamembert is the most dairy-like of all the plant-based cheeses I’ve tried. And I’ve tried a lot. It is every bit as indulgent as camembert.

“Finally, those looking for a plant-based Christmas cheese can have something rich and festive that in no way feels like a concession. This is the best plant-based Christmas burger we’ve ever made.”

Once Christmas Day has passed, Honest Burgers will be bringing back the ‘Hangover Burger’, which features beef, bacon, double American cheese, fried egg, Bloody Mary ketchup, rosemary salted chips (inside the burger, chip butty style), rocket and pickles. This will be available from December 26-January 1.
