Review: new Spanish deli Pinch in Rose Crescent, Cambridge
Pinch is a new Spanish deli café and bar, located in Rose Crescent, which takes its name from ‘pinxtos’ (or pinchos), small tapas-style foods which originate from northern Spain.
The site is understated and elegant, with the lights, red brick interior and plants creating a rustic feel reminiscent of the Spanish countryside. There are ceiling-high shelves at one side selling all sorts of products, from sauces and spices to biscuits, and chocolate powder to crisps. The deli counter displays a selection of hot and cold food.
To begin with, we had a selection of hot food, namely vegetarian paella, chorizo and black pudding on bread, halloumi on bread, and a small pot of venison salami with goat’s cheese and honey - which was my personal favourite.
Cold food-wise, I especially enjoyed the chimichurri steak (which can also be served hot) and, surprisingly as I’d never had it before (and I’m not really a fan of seafood), the crab-stuffed piquillo pepper.
We accompanied this with a ‘Rosa’ spritz - sweet with a hint of lemon - and my wife had a ‘Sidra Bere’, a traditional cider from the Basque region of Spain. Indeed, there are plenty of alcoholic drinks available and a particularly impressive gin & tonic list.
Although it may not have looked much, the selection of food was actually surprisingly filling, though we still found room for a tasty bakewell tart flapjack and a luxurious hot chocolate each.
For those who prefer more traditional tapas-style foods, the deli stocks plenty of cured meat and cheese options, while also catering for people who may want to try something a little more fancy with a regularly changing list of tempting delights. And of course, we couldn’t leave without buying some exotic food to take home.
